Samurai Uladh Judo Club players showed another display of their strength and skill at the Galway Open and returned home with an impressive medal tally of 12 Gold, 6 Silver and 15 Bronze.

The medal haul was spread across all sections of the judo competition from the youngest Minors, up to Cadets and then right through Juniors, Seniors and Veterans.

The youngest club members started the day off well with 3 Golds in 3 consecutive weights for the girls. Aobhe McLaughlin (U27kgs), Sarah Jane Porter (U30kgs) and Eva Conaghan (U33kgs) This was followed up with a Bronze for Erika Lysenko (U33kgs) and a Silver for Sinead Harnett (U44kgs).

Following up these good performances the Minor Boys claimed a Silver via Joshua Rutherford (U28kgs) and 3 Bronze medals courtesy of Pearse Jordan (U28kgs), Conal McLaughlin (U34kgs) and Callum Green (U37kgs).

From then on in the medals just kept coming for the Club made up of members from Derry, Burnfoot and Moville.

Many Moville students made their debut in this competition with 3 players taking part in the Mixed Ability Judo Assist Category and achieving medals, Gold for both Alan Brown and Chantelle NcAuley and a Silver for Callum Harrison.

The Cadet Girls added to the medal count with 3 Gold, Jodie Jordan (U40kgs), Roisin O’Brien (U48kgs) and Samanthan Weir (O63kgs) and 4 Bronze medals Mariead Dobbins and Chantelle McAuley (U36kgs), Chloe Moir and Bronagh Moore (U63kgs)

Again the Cadet Boys continued to rack up wins with Silvers for Joshua Green (U41kgs), Tiarnan McGilloway (U50kgs) and Jordan Green (U73kgs) and 3 Bronze from Conal Doogan (U45kgs), Gareth Townley and Luke Farren (U55kgs).

The Junior Women section provided Samurai Uladh with 2 Golds from Kathleen McNaught (U63kgs) and Samantha Weir (U70kgs) and Kathleen also went on to compete in the Senior competition and again come away with the Gold Medal.

Not to be outdone by the Club’s younger members, Coach Paul Green entered not only the Veteran category but also the Senior Men U90kgs. While coming away with a Bronze medal in the Senior category, Paul added to the medal collection with a clean sweep and Gold medal in the Veterans.

Also participating in the Veteran section were Manus O’Donnell (U73kgs), Phil Townley (U73kgs) and Clive Roylance (U90kgs). All three came home with Bronze medals and a special congratulations to Philip Townley who was taking part in his first ever judo competition.

Needless to say, as always, Club Coaches Paul, Seamy, Manus and Donna were proud of the performance given from each and every club member on the day.

Samurai Success At Liverpool

Seven Samurai Uladh players competed at the recent North West Age Bands in St Helens, Liverpool. They returned home with 2 silver and 2 bronze medals after two days of strong, competitive judo.

On the first day of competition Victoria Colhoun, Oisin McLaughlin, Callum Nash and Joshua Green represented the club. Victoria set the standard for the day by winning a bronze in the highly competitive u-48kg category. She won her first three fights in a row by ippon before losing narrowly by a yuko in the semi-final. Next up was Osin McLaughlin who fought "out of his skin" to claim a silver medal in the +66kg category. Oisin was giving away in excess of 20kgs to some of his opponents yet still produced some excellent, strong, technical judo to win his silver medal. The talented Callum Nash kept the medals rolling with a bronze in an extremely difficult u-38kg category, full of very talented players from britain's top clubs. The only fight he lost in the category was the semi final, against the british number one, on a very dubious shido decision 19 seconds from the end of the contest when both players were level on a shido each. Callum picked himself up from this disappointment to produce a spectacular ippon winning score in his bronze medal fight. Joshua Green was Samurai Uladh's final competitor of the day in the powerfully strong u-42kg category. Although not on the medal podium this time Joshua showed all the potential he possesses on the day, competing against older, stronger opponents. His father Paul was very proud of his spirit and his technical ability on the day.

Samurai Uladh had three players competing on the second day of competition, Kathleen McNaught, Micheal McCay and Stevie McLaughlin. Kathleen fought in the u-63kg category finding herself up against much more experienced Dan grades. Although not among the medals, on another day she might have won all her fights such is the margin at this level. In fact she almost took her 2nd Dan opponent to golden score but got caught with a ko uchi gari for yuko nine seconds form the end of the contest! Micheal fought in the u-60kg category and was unlucky on the day not to leave with a medal, only losing out for bronze on count back. He actually threw the eventual silver medallist in his category for ippon with an outstanding left sided seoi nage. Samurai Uladh's final competitor of the day Stevie McLaughlin produced some excellent judo to win silver in the u-55kg category. The foundation for his success on the day was down to his strong ne-waza. He won two very important contests with an arm lock and a pin respectively. His final opponent had to retire with a dislocated shoulder, picking up the unfortunate injury after an o-uchi-gari attack by Stevie that had earned him a yuko and put him ahead in the contest.

So all in, it was a very successful weekend for Samurai Uladh and for Irish judo. Coaches Seamus Gallagher, Paul Green, Tony McLaughlin and Donna Nash were extremely pleased with the performances of all their players over the weekend. Well done to all concerned.
